THE BASICS:

THE LEAD: Coming off a disappointing performance Friday evening at Lee University, the Valdosta State volleyball team came out of the gates on fire, but was unable to hang on to the lead, falling 3-1 at West Georgia Saturday afternoon. VSU won the opening set 25-21, but dropped the next three.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Blazers took command of the initial set early, scoring seven of the first ten points of the set.
- The Wolves pulled within 7-6, but a five-point swing by the Blazers swelled the lead to 12-6.
- VSU held the lead for most of the set as UWG tied it at 19, but three-straight points from the Blazers pushed the lead to 22-19.
- Two miscues by the Wolves ended the set, 25-21.
- The second set was hotly contested as neither team had more than a three-point lead for much of the set.
- VSU led 14-2 on an ace from sophomore Tammy Reyes-Perez and a kill from junior Dariah Powell.
- The Wolves roared back with six-straight points for an 18-14 lead capped with an ace from Madi Fleming.
- The Blazers pulled within 20-16, but UWG stretched the lead to 23-17 and settled for the 25-18 win.
- UWG scored 13 of the first 17 points, but the Blazers dug deep and scored ten of the next 14 points, pulling within 17-14, but the Wolves kept the lead at arm's length.
- The Blazers pulled within 22-20 on a kill from junior Camille Uadiale, but a pair of attack errors by VSU and an ace from the Wolves ended the set at 25-20.
- Just as in the third set, the Wolves jumped out to a big lead scoring 20 of the first 26 points en route to a 25-16 clinching set.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- For the match, VSU hit .164 with 41 kills on 110 swings with 43 digs and 40 assists, while committing 23 errors, including 19 in the final three sets.
- Uadiale had a team-high 11 kills on 20 swings, while hitting .450 for the match. Junior Kayla Widera had 10 kills and hit .444.
- Reyes-Perez recorded 36 assists and senior Chelsea Chavers had a team-high 12 digs.
- VSU hit .462 for the first set with 16 kills and four errors in 26 attempts, but hit negative numbers in the second set and under .100 in the fourth set.
- The Blazers had 25 kills over the final three sets with 19 errors.
- UWG hit .265 for the match with 48 kills, 18 errors in 113 swings. The Wolves had 43 assists and 42 digs.
