Softball Opens Weekend With Split Against West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. – After a solid performance in the series opener, the Blazers slipped in game two for a doubleheader split (12-5, 0-6) against the West Florida Argonauts in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Pensacola, Fla.

In game one, the Blazers put together a stellar offensive effort, with a 13-hit performance that led to runs in all but one inning. Moreover, Valdosta State scored multiple runs in four of those innings and put a four-spot on the Argos in the fourth.

Eight different batters recorded base hits in the game, while Jessica Mohl, Taylor Hartenbach, Heather Robinson, and Lacey Crandall each notched multiple hits. Furthermore, Robinson and Tana McDaniel homered, Brandy Morgan tripled, and two of Hartenbach's three hits were doubles.

The offensive onslaught was more than enough for Kasie Johnson, who improved to 12-4 on the season after allowing seven hits and four runs in five innings of work. Only one of the runs was earned, and Kathryn Carter came on in the sixth to finish off the game with just two hits allowed.

In game two, the second inning was the difference, as UWF broke through for five runs on five hits and two hit batsmen in one frame. The half-inning brought Carter's game two start to an end, before Avery Lamb came on to strike out six and allow just two additional runs one third of the way through the sixth. Kameron Coggins finished the game off for VSU with two-thirds of scoreless work in the bottom of the same inning.

Carter fell to 15-4 with the loss, while UWF's Sarah Maloney went the distance against the Blazers and allowed three hits to improve her record to 8-4 on the year.

Valdosta State slid to 39-10 with the Saturday split and moved to 23-8 against conference opponents. Meanwhile, the Argonauts shifted to 28-19 on the year and moved to 17-14 in league play.

The Blazers and the Argonauts will square off for the final time this weekend at 2:00 p.m. EST on Sunday afternoon in Pensacola, Fla.
