Blazers Slug Six Homers in ASU Midweek Sweep

VALDOSTA, Ga. - Tana McDaniel hit a three-run walkoff homer in game two, which served as an appropriate finish to a Valdosta State slugfest sweep over the Albany State Golden Rams in a non-conference, softball doubleheader on Tuesday at Steel's Diamond in Valdosta, Ga.

McDaniel's homer gave the Blazers (38-9) a 12-4 lead and a mercy rule win in game two, and the long ball marked the sixth homer of the day by the Blazer offense. Both McDaniel and freshman Cassey Cornelius delivered two each, while seniors Heather Robinson and Jessica Mohl added one apiece in respective games.

The Blazers jumped on the Golden Rams (25-22) in the bottom half of the first with three walks and a Mohl double to plate two and take an early 2-0 lead. Two innings later, McDaniel hit her first of the day over the wall in right center, and Cornelius teamed up with Robinson for back-to-back jacks in the fifth to put the game out of reach for Albany State.

In game two, ASU's Brianna Murillo gave the Golden Rams their only lead of the day with one of her three home runs, but the advantage didn't last long. Brandy Morgan started the scoring for the Blazers in the bottom of the same inning when she drove in Mohl and Taylor Hartenbach with a two-run double. One batter later, Robinson brought Morgan across with a double to left center, and Cornelius struck again with a round tripper to dead center field. The homer marked the sixth of the year for the GSC Freshman of the Year nominee, and Valdosta State finished the opening frame with a 5-1 advantage.

After Murillo hit a three run homer in the top of the third, the Blazers used two hits, including Mohl's seventh triple of the year, to plate two more and put VSU up 8-4. The pair of runs set the Blazers up for a mercy-rule finish in the fifth, when Lacey Crandall drove in a run before McDaniel blasted the aforementioned no-doubter over the left field wall to end the game.

Kathryn Carter, who came on in relief in the third for Valdosta State, picked up her fourth win in as many days for the Blazers to improve to 15-3 on the season, while Kasie Johnson scored the game one victory to improve to 11-3. Johnson's complete-game effort dropped her ERA to 2.28 on the season and marked her 10th complete game of the season.

Valdosta State will return to league action for the final time during the regular season with a Gulf South Conference series against the West Florida Argonauts this weekend in Pensacola, Fla. The series will start with a 2:00 p.m. EST doubleheader on Saturday, and will conclude with a single game at 2:00 p.m. EST on Sunday.
