VALDOSTA, Ga. - The No. 5 ranked Valdosta State Blazers hosted three home matches in as many days and scored wins against No. 4 Columbus State and Lee, before falling in a tight contest against No. 2 Barry on Sunday to close out the weekend.
Friday's thrilling victory saw the Blazers score three straight wins in singles action to overcome a 4-1 deficit, which set the stage for
Davis Stewart at No. 6. With the match on the line and a 4-4 tie, Stewart battled through borderline exhaustion to take down Jorge Vargas, 7-5, 6-4, to secure the win and trigger a Blazer celebration with a 5-4 win.
On Saturday, the Blazers jumped on the Lee Flames early with three wins in doubles action. Lee picked up a pair of wins in singles action at courts No. 4 and No. 5, but the Blazers scored wins when they needed to cruise to a 7-2 win. The victory marked VSU's second league win of the year.
Finally, Barry Bucs proved to be a little too much for Valdosta State on Sunday, as the Bucs overcame a 2-1 deficit to win 5-3 and remain perfect with a 6-0 record on the year. The Blazers, Meanwhile, dropped to 5-2 on the season.
