VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State men's tennis team returned to form on Friday afternoon in Pensacola, Fla. with a 5-0 neutral match victory over the Mississippi College Choctaws.
The Gulf South Conference victory lifted Valdosta State to 9-3 overall and 6-1 against conference opponents, while the Choctaws fell to 6-7 overall and dropped to 1-5 in GSC action.
It didn't take long for the Blazers to claim the victory after starting with a bang at No. 1 doubles. Valdosta State's No. 19 ranked contingent of
Jordi Mas and Florian Simbozel upset No. 14 Joan Valy and Marcos Rocca with an 8-6 win. The victory set the tone for the rest of the team, and
Fernando Rivas joined Francisco Yim Kim to hold momentum at No. 2 with an 8-2 win over Lucio Menezes and Max Nilges. Alex Holm and
Davis Stewart finished doubles play in fine form with an 8-4 victory over Sanders Barrick and Petar Damjanovic at No. 3 to put the Blazers on top 3-0 in the match.
Yim Kim and Stewart gave VSU the two extra points needed for the match victory with dominant wins at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Yim Kim defeated J. Rodrigo Gonzalez 6-2, 6-2, and Stewart toppled Nilges 6-1, 6-2.
