Softball Closes Out Perfect Week With Sweep of AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Valdosta State used an offensive surge to tally ten runs over the course of two games to secure a doubleheader sweep (6-1, 4-2) of Auburn Montgomery in Gulf South Conference softball action on Friday afternoon in Montgomery, Ala.

The Blazers scored in each of the first six innings of the opening game, which helped Valdosta State run away with a 6-1 victory. In the circle, sophomore Kathryn Carter held the Warhawks to five hits while striking out five batters en route to her seventh win of the season.

Jessica Mohl served as the fuel for Valdosta State's offensive success in game one, as she accounted for four of the Blazers' six hits. One of her four hits marked her fifth triple of the year, a number which places her atop the GSC. In addition, she finished with three RBI's and a run scored. Brandy Morgan continued her red hot streak with a solo shot in the fifth, marking her third homer in the last five games.

Auburn-Montgomery gave the Blazers more of test in game two and took an early 1-0 lead over Kasie Johnson with two hits and a run scored in the bottom of the first. The lead didn't last long, however, as sophomore Logan Hill left the yard during her first at bat of the game to pull VSU even at 1-1.

The Warhawks claimed a lead for the second time of the game in the bottom of the third with a Michaelyn Foster homer to lead off the inning. Valdosta State retaliated quickly for a second time, however, answering AUM in the bottom of the frame with one run on three hits to claim VSU's first lead of the nightcap. After Taylor Hartenbach and Tana McDaniel delivered back-to-back singles to start the half inning, Lacey Crandall moved both runners up on a sacrifice bunt. Cassey Cornelius followed up with a timely sacrifice fly to tie the game, and Danielle Patterson put the Blazers on top 3-2 with an RBI single to left field.

A sacrifice fly by Hartenbach in the top of the fifth put the finishing touches on back-to-back base hits off the bats of Morgan and Hill, respectively, and gave Johnson room to collect her second win in as many days. Johnson is now 6-2 on the year.

With the wins, VSU improved to 22-7 overall and 10-5 in conference play, while the Warhawks slipped to 12-9 overall and dropped below .500 in league action with a record of 7-8.

The Blazers will return to action next Wednesday with a doubleheader showdown against Miles, starting at 3:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday. Stay tuned to www.vstateblazers.com for coverage of all VSU softball events as the season rolls on.
