CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Valdosta State women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end with a 72-61 loss at Lee University Saturday afternoon. VSU fell to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in Gulf South Conference play, while Lee improved to 8-2 and 3-0 in league play.
Lee had a game-high 32 points from Abby Bertram on 12 of 17 from the field and a perfect 6 of 6 from beyond the arc, while going 2 of 2 from the line leading to players in double figures. VSU had 18 points from senior
Crystal Townsend on 7 of 11 from the field with one triple and she went 3 of 4 from the line.
VSU shot 23 of 57 from the field (.404), while struggling from beyond the arc on 3 of 17 and went 12 of 15 from the line. Townsend and senior
Shon Kitchens each had six rebounds to lead the team. Senior
Maddy Corazza added 13 points on 4 of 7 from the field and a team-high 5 of 7 from the line.
The Flames shot 44.6 percent from the floor on 25 of 56, while going 8 of 16 from beyond the arc and 14 of 19 from the line. VSU had 25 turnovers in the game, leading to a 24-18 lead in points off turnovers for the Flames. Nicky Widenski added 13 points off the bench for Lee.
The Lady Blazers had just one lead in the game, at 7:25 in the first quarter, while Lee had its largest advantage at 15 with 6:48 left in the third.
VSU continues on the road Monday at 6:30 p.m. ET at Alabama Huntsville, before the Christmas holiday and will return home to host Thomas College on Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. at The Complex. Check back with vstateblazers.com.
