THE LEAD: Behind three players in double figures and eight players who scored, the Valdosta State women's basketball team got back on the winning track with a 67-53 victory Saturday evening over Christian Brothers at The Complex. Senior
Maddy Corazza paced the team with 15 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lady Blazers opened the game with the first five points on jumper from Jazmyn McIntosh and a triple from Nari Garner for a 5-0 lead.
- Christian Brothers battled back and took its only lead of the half at 10-9 on a layup from Kelsey Adkins and extended the leady to 12-9 on a layup from Lauren Taylor with 2:38 left in the first quarter.
- Senior Sonya Franklin tied the game at 12, sparking a 7-0 run for a 16-12 lead with one minute left in the quarter. VSU settled for a 16-14 lead after one frame.
- McIntosh scored on a free throw for a 21-14 lead and the largest to that point of the game early in the second.
- Five quick points from the Buccaneers cut the deficit to 21-19, but a triple from senior Crystal Townsend and layup from senior Maddy Corazza off her own offensive rebound pushed the lead to nine at 28-19 as the Blazers led at half 34-25.
- VSU swelled the lead to 11 midway through the third as McIntosh grabbed her own rebound and put back for a 42-31 lead.
- CBU used an 11-1 run pulling within 43-42, but a bucket in the paint from Corazza pushed the lead 45-42 as VSU then extended the lead to six at 50-44 with a triple from Townsend late in the quarter.
- Franklin drove to the hoop for two for a 52-48 score after three.
- VSU built the lead to ten twice in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter for a 60-50 lead with 4:53 left.
- A triple from Corazza built the lead to a game-high 13, followed by a steal and score for a 65-50 lead with 3:16 left.
- VSU outscored CBU 15-5 for the final frame and the 67-53 lead, as CBU went without a field goal over the final 7:53 of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- For the half, VSU shot 37.8 percent on 14 of 37, while going 3 of 7 from range and 3 of 4 from the line.
- Seven players scored for VSU as it held a commanding 30-13 lead in rebounding and a 15-4 advantage on the offensive glass, while leading by the same score in second chance points.
- CBU shot 35.7 percent on 10 of 28, with four triples and went 1 of 2 from the line. Adkins had a team-high eight points for the Bucs.
- The Lady Blazers shot 40.3 percent for the game on 26 of 67, while going 5 of 17 from beyond the arc and 8 of 10 from the line.
- Along with Corazza, who went 7 of 10 from the field with one triple, McIntosh added 11 points and Townsend scored 12 points as each had seven rebounds, along with sophomore Kayla Bonilla recording seven rebounds.
- CBU shot 36.5 percent on 19 of 52, while going 7 of 25 from beyond the arc and 8 of 11 from the line. Four Buccaneers were in double figures with 14 from Adkins.
- VSU dominated the glass, 48-26 and 23-9 on the offensive end, while forcing 19 turnovers, leading to a 20-17 lead in points off turnovers and the Lady Blazers held a 25-10 lead in second chance points.
