Quick Start Sparks No. 6 Blazers to 84-71 Victory Saturday Evening

THE BASICS:
Score: #6 Valdosta State 84, Christian Brothers 71

THE LEAD:  Four starters in double figures and a 14-0 start sparked the No. 6 Valdosta State men's basketball team to an 84-71 victory Saturday evening over visiting Christian Brothers.  Senior Beau Justice finished with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds.    
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • The Blazers raced out to a 14-0 lead through the first four minutes of the game capped on a triple from senior Beau Justice.
  • Later, a triple from senior Desmond DeRamus swelled the lead to 16 at 25-9 with 10:33 left in the first half.  
  • A layup from Justice off steal pushed the lead to 21 at 38-17 with 5:36 left in the half. 
  • Christian Brothers settled down and began making some shots from deep as the Buccaneers had early foul trouble with both big men saddled with three fouls each.  
  • A tip-in from junior Goree Venable gave VSU a 40-17 lead with 5:04 left, but a 19-10 run pulled CBU within 50-36, however a great inbounds play by junior Clay Guillozet at the buzzer pushed the lead back to 16 at 52-36 at half.
  • Buckets from Justice and DeRamus, who made his first start of the season, followed by a triple from senior Winston Morgan, swelled the lead to 23 at 62-39 with 17:05 left.
  • Guillozet had a great offensive rebound and bucket for a 66-42 lead with 14:30 left, but the Bucs continued to chip away, cutting the deficit to 15 with 10 minutes left. 
  • The teams then traded runs with CBU cutting the deficit to 13 at 81-68 with 3:06 left, but a Guillozet layup and a charity toss from DeRamus, pushed the lead to 16 late as CBU buried a triple for the final bucket of the game and the 84-71 margin.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Justice paced the Blazers with 14 points in the first half on 5 of 8 from the field with two triples and two free throws, while recording four rebounds and two steals.  
  • VSU shot 20 of 37 from the field for 54.1 percent, while going 7 of 17 from beyond the arc and 5 of 6 from the line.  The Blazers had 18 rebounds, while recording seven on the offensive, while committing just two turnovers in the half.
  • CBU shot 15 of 30 the field with three triples and went 3 of 3 from the line.  Joe Laravie had 10 points for the Bucs on 4 of 9 from the field with one triple.  
  • VSU held a 13-4 lead in points off turnovers as the Blazers forced CBU into eight miscues. 
  • Seven of the Blazers' nine players who played in the half scored.  
  • Justice went 8 of 14 from the field with two triples and 4 of 4 from the line, while Guillozet added 17 points on 8 of 17 from the field with a triple and eight rebounds.  Morgan added 15 points – all on triples and DeRamus had 11 points, eight assists and four rebounds.  
  • VSU shot 32 of 69 from the field for 46.4 percent, while going 11 of 28 from beyond the arc (.393) and 9 of 12 from the line.  The Blazers held a 38-35 lead in rebounding, while recording just five turnovers in the game.
  • CBU shot 28 of 63 from the floor for 44.4 percent, while going 7 of 20 from range and 8 of 10 from the line.  
  • Adam Dieball missed a triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, while Laravie had 20 points to lead the Bucs.
