THE LEAD: Behind five starters in double figures, the No. 6-ranked Valdosta State men's basketball team ran its winning streak to eight games with an 82-62 victory at Tuskegee, to sweep the season series. VSU junior
Darrell Jones had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while senior
Beau Justice had 25 points to lead all-scorers with a 23-point outburst in the second half as VSU opened the second half on a 19-0 run.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Three-straight triples from senior Winston Morgan sparked a 10-0 run for a 22-13 lead with 12:18 left in the first half.
- Jones hit a triple for a 25-15 lead with 10:31 left, but a 5-0 run by the Golden Tigers cut the deficit to 29-24 with 7:08 left in the half.
- Senior Greg Zuppas ended a long scoring drought for the Blazers with a layup for a 31-24 lead as Justice later pushed the lead to eight at 40-32 with one minute left in the half.
- Tuskegee trimmed the lead to three at 40-37, but junior Clay Guillozet buried a triple with seven seconds left for a 43-37 lead at halftime.
- Justice began the 23-point second half with a triple for a 46-37 lead to get things started in the second half, sparking a 19-0 run to start the second half and a 62-37 lead with 13:44 left.
- Guillozet buried a triple for a 68-39 lead and a 25-2 run to open the second half with 12:23 remaining.
- The Golden Tigers pulled within 82-62 with a minute left for the final margin.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Morgan paced the Blazers with 12 points in the first half on 3 of 5 from beyond the arc and 3 of 4 from the line, while senior Desmond DeRamus and Jones each had nine points, with Jones recording six rebounds.
- VSU shot 17 of 34 from the field and 3 of 9 from beyond the arc, while going 6 of 11 from the line. The Blazers had 17 rebounds with 11 assists and just four turnovers.
- Tuskegee also shot 50 percent from the field on 13 of 26, while going 4 of 11 from range and 7 of 9 from the line. The Golden Tigers had 18 rebounds with nine assists and 10 turnovers.
- VSU shot 32 of 61 for 52.5 percent for the game, while going 12 of 26 from beyond the arc (6 of 10 in the second half, but struggled from the line going just 6 of 15.
- The VSU "D" held TU to just 24 of 60 from the field for the game (40 percent), while going just 11 of 34 in the second half (.323) and 2 of 12 from beyond the arc in the second frame. The Tigers were 6 of 23 from beyond the arc and 8 of 11 from the line.
- TU had three players in double figures led by 15 points from Myles Thomas.
- Justice went 11 of 21 from the field and 3 of 8 from beyond the arc, with five assists, five rebounds and just two turnovers.
- Morgan buried five triples and 4 of 6 from the line for 19 points, while Jones went 5 of 8 from the field with one triple, 10 rebounds, four assists and a career-high four blocks.
