THE LEAD: The Valdosta State volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at West Alabama Friday evening in the second to last match of the regular season. The Blazers battled back from losing the first set for a 25-23 win in the second set, but were unable to come away with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UWA posted a 25-16 win in the first set as VSU hit .086 with just six kills in the set, while West Alabama hit .231 with 16 kills.
- The second set was much closer as UWA took a 15-11 lead with a four point rally midway through the set, but the Blazers continued to fight and tied the set at 22 with a kill from junior Kayla Widera.
- VSU took its first lead since 5-4 at 23-22 on an attack error by UWA and two more errors on the Tigers gave VSU the set.
- The Tigers scored 10 of the first 12 points of the third set and cruised to a 25-6 win as VSU hit -.143 with just two kills.
- UWA won the fourth set 25-17.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- VSU hit .083 for the match with 25 kills in 120 swings, while UWA hit .287 with 62 kills in 143 swings.
- Widera paced the Blazers with six kills and hit a team-best .353 with one solo block and one block assist.
- Junior Dariah Powell had 16 digs and sophomore Tammy Reyes-Perez added 15 assists.
- UWA had four players with double-digit kills and three with double-doubles for the match.Madison Cooler had 15 kills and Kassie Till recorded 52 assists.
