THE LEAD: The Valdosta State volleyball team downed visiting Auburn Montgomery 3-1 in four sets Tuesday evening for its eighth Gulf South Conference win of the season and 13
thoverall. Senior
Katie McInnis paced the Blazers with 13 kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first set saw the Blazers dominate early and race out to an 11-4 lead on the Warhawks.
- VSU then extended the lead to 16-7 on a miscue by the Warhawks as AUM called a timeout.
- The Blazers went on for the 25-18 win.
- In the second set, VSU jumped out to a 6-1 lead and held a 14-5 lead, but AUM roared back to tie the match at 20 as it scored 15 of the next 21 points.
- An attack error by the Blazers gave AUM its first lead of the set at 21-20, but the Blazers tied it again at 21 on a kill from senior Chloe' Chubilleau.
- The Warhawks had some big blocks down the stretch in the second set as Brianna Garvin and Nyah Whittlesey combined for a big block for a 23-21 lead and an attack error on the Blazers, the 11therror of the set, gave AUM set point.
- Whittlesey scored the kill to tie the match at one.
- The third set saw AUM hold a slim margin for much of the set, but an ace from McInnis tied the set at 16 as the set saw a total of eight ties with five lead changes.
- Chubilleau broke a 19-19 tie with a kill, followed by back-to-back kills from freshman Jessie Mooney for a 22-19 lead.
- Two miscues by the Warhawks handed VSU the third set for a 2-1 lead at 25-21.
- The fourth set saw AUM take an early 5-3 lead, but the Blazers scored seven of the next eight points for a 10-6 lead.
- AUM then cut the deficit to 14-10, but the Blazers used five-straight serves from sophomore Tammy Reyes-Perez for a 17-10 score.
- The Warhawks wouldn't go quietly as they cut the deficit to 19-15, but McInnis had three serves for a 22-16 lead, followed by a kill from Reyes-Perez, ace and attack error ended the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- For the match, VSU hit .221 with 55 kills in 140 swings and 24 errors. The Blazers had 44 digs, 50 assists and three blocks.
- AUM hit .195 with 42 kills and 19 errors in 118 swings. The Warhawks had 37 assists, 52 digs and 11 blocks as Garvin tallied four solo rejections and four assisted blocks.
- McInnis hit .156 with 13 kills in 32 swings, while recording eight digs.
- Junior Kayla Widera had 11 kills with two assisted blocks and 22 swings, while Mooney tallied 12 kills with eight digs, one solo block and one assisted rejection.
- The match saw 14 ties and nine lead changes.
