RECORDS:Valdosta State 13-15, Georgia College 12-9

THE LEAD –  The Valdosta State volleyball team won the opening set in a makeup match with Georgia College, but was unable to hang on as the Bobcats won the next three sets for a 3-1 victory, Thursday evening.  VSU freshman Jessie Mooney had a career-high 18 kills for the Blazers.  The match was originally scheduled for earlier in October, but was postponed due to Hurricane Michael.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Blazers got off to a hot start, scoring nine of the first 12 points in the opening set as sophomore Tammy Reyes-Perez, Mooney and junior Dariah Powell each had long serves.
  • The Bobcats used a scored three-straight, but the Blazers built the lead back up to seven at 17-10 on an attack error by the GCSU.
  • GCSU erased the deficit with an 8-1 run for an 18-18 score and took the lead for the first time on an attack error by the Blazers (19-18).
  • The set was tied three more times and four times in the frame, as the fifth miscue by the Bobcats in the set gave VSU a 24-22 lead.  Following a kill from GCSU, VSU senior Katie McInnis recorded a kill for a 25-23 win.
  • The second set was much like the first in a back-and-forth affair as it saw seven ties and three lead changes.
  • Following an 9-9 tie, the Blazers rattled off a 10-1 run for a 19-10 lead, but only to see the Bobcats come roaring back using a 10-4 run for a 23-20 deficit.
  • A ball handling error on the Bobcats gave VSU set point, but GCSU scored seven of the next eight points for a 27-25 win.
  • Just like the previous two sets, the third set was a tight affair as it saw 14 ties, with neither team having more than a one-point lead until GCSU used back-to-back kills from Emily Pope for a 21-18 lead.
  • VSU pulled within 23-21 on a McInnis kill, but the Bobcats got a kill from Libby Bochniak for a 24-21 score.
  • The Blazers used a service error by the Bobcats and a kill from Mooney for a 24-23 deficit, but Bochniak had the final kill for a 2-1 lead for the visitors.
  • GCSU blew open an 8-8 fourth set with a 10-0 run for an 18-8 lead and cruised to the 25-12 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • VSU hit .237 for the match, but hit .065 in the final set with a match-low seven kills in the fourth frame.
  • Mooney had 18 kills and hit .444 for the match with nine digs and one ace.  McInnis added 14 kills and nine digs also, while Powell led the team with 25 digs.
