Blazers Fall in Three Sets at Montevallo

THE BASICS
SCORE: Montevallo 3, Valdosta State 0 (12-25, 19-25, 18-25)
RECORDS: Valdosta State 10-12 (6-4 GSC), Montevallo 17-3 (8-2 GSC)
LOCATION: Montevallo, Ala.
THE LEAD: The Valdosta State volleyball team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end with a 3-0 loss at Montevallo Friday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Blazers struggled in the match as two of the three sets the team hit negative numbers.
  • Junior Dariah Powell led the team with ten kills, while leading the team with nine digs.
  • Sophomore Tammy Reyes-Perez had a team-high 22 assists for the match.
  • Montevallo was led by a double-double from Brie Blume with 11 kills and 16 digs.
  • The Falcons used a 5-0 run early in the first set to break a 2-2 tie for a 7-2 lead and timeout by the Blazers.
  • Later a 9-0 run swelled the lead to 21-8 as Montevallo went on for a 25-12 win in the first set.
  • A kill by Powell in the second set pulled VSU within 9-6, but a quick three points from Montevallo pushed the lead to 12-6.
  • VSU had its best run of the match, scoring seven-straight for a 15-14 lead, but the Falcons fought back and took a 19-17 lead.
  • Closing within 19-18 on an attack error, Montevallo scored six of the final seven points for the 25-19 win.
  • A late four-point rally by the Blazers pulled them within 24-18, but a kill from Amanda Nugent ended the match.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • VSU hit .061 for the match with 30 kills in 115 swings with 23 errors, while Montevallo hit .283 with 37 kills and just nine errors on 99 swings.
  • The Blazers hit .286 in the second set, but Montevallo countered hitting .444 as the teams combined for just seven errors in the second stanza.
  • In the third set, VSU had a match-high ten miscues for a -.022 percentage with nine kills.
  • Powell hit .233 with the ten kills in 30 swings to lead the team, while Brioni Dixon and Blume each hit over .300 for the Falcons.
 
UP NEXT:
  • VSU travels to Alabama Huntsville for a 2 p.m. match Saturday, before heading to Orlando, Fla., for the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Crossover next weekend.
  • The matchups for the Crossover will be announced by early next week.
