MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Valdosta State women's basketball teams offensive surge wasn't enough to stop the Lady Buccaneers sharp shooting, as the Lady Blazers fell to Christian Brothers 89-94 on Saturday in a Gulf South Conference matchup at Canale Arena in Memphis, Tenn.
The loss dropped Valdosta State to 11-5 on the season and 5-3 in the GSC action. The CBU win lifted the Lady Bucs to 5-9 overall and 4-4 against league opponents.Â
The Lady Blazers put up a season-high 28 first quarter points, but CBU nearly matched VSU with 23 of their own. Heading into halftime, Christian Brothers led 51-46, despite a strong VSU presence in the paint. Christian Brothers shot 56.8% in the first half alone, which was highlighted by Brynne Lytle (13 pts), and Courtney Banks (10 pts).
The second half was more of the same for the Lady Bucs. Christian Brothers pulled away in the 4th, and although the Lady Blazers battled hard down the stretch with some big shots, it wasn't enough to overcome CBU's 27 points fourth quarter points.
CBU claimed the upset, despite the fact that the Lady Blazers out-rebounded CBU 40-31 and scored 14 second chance points. The Lady Blazers managed to offset VSU's rebounding edge by capitalizing on Lady Blazer miscues and converted Valdosta State's 16 turnovers into 21 points.
Individually for the Lady Blazers,Â
Madi Mitchell drained 17 first half points, leading to 28 total points and 10 rebounds in the game. Mitchell finished her night with her fifth double-double of the season and her second of the week.Â
Fellow senior Kenya Samone'Â Dixon was also powerhouse on the boards and pulled down 10 total rebounds for the Lady Blazers. Samone'-Dixon currently ranks third in the GSC in the rebounding category, averaging 9.4 per game and totaling 150 on the season.Â
Next up, the Lady Blazers head to Jackson, Tenn. for another GSC matchup on Monday against the Lady Bulldogs of Union. The tip off is slated for 5 P.M. Â ESTÂ with full coverage available atÂ
