Union Outlasts Lady Blazers, 82-66

Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. - The Lady Blazers braved the snowy conditions in Jackson, Tenn. but suffered a tough 82-66 loss to No. 19 Union University in Monday night's Gulf South Conference road matchup. 

With the win, Union picked up their 10th straight win and 14th consecutive home victory to to improve to 16-1 on the year. The Lady Bulldogs are now 9-0 in conference play where they currently rank 1st in the league. Valdosta State's loss dropped the Lady Blazers to 11-5 overall and 5-3 in GSC action. 

Senior guard Taylor Buie led the way for the Lady Blazers in the 1st quarter of play, draining 4 out of 7 field goals and pouring nine of VSU's 20 first quarter points. In contrast, Union racked up 17 points to close out the opening quarter.

The second quarter went in favor of the Lady Blazers early, after Buie drained another three in the opening minute to spark an 11-2 run. Valdosta State struggled to contain Chelsey Shumpert, however, who represents the leading scorer in the GSC. Shumpert helped Union survive VSU's push in the second quarter with a shooting barrage down the stretch that led to six first half threes and 24 first half points. 

Trailing 37-36 at the break, Union came out of the locker room red hot and ultimately ran away with the game after a 25-4 run that began late in the third quarter and carried over into the final period.

The Lady Blazer seniors carried the load on offense all night for the red and black, with Taylor Buie (19 pts) and Kenya Samone' Dixon (16 pts) offering up strong contributions over the course of the game. Madi Mitchell also notched her third consecutive double double of the season and ended the night with 25 points and 11 rebounds in 38 minutes of play. 

The Lady Blazers look to remain undefeated at home when they return to The Complex on Thursday, January 18th to face the Nighthawks of Auburn Montgomery. The GSC matchup is set for 6:00 p.m. in Valdosta, and live stats and video can be found at vstateblazers.com
