VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State volleyball returned to form in a big way with an impressive 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-19) Gulf South Conference win over the Auburn-Montgomery Warhawks in front of 300-plus on Friday night at The Complex.
Following a pair of tight wins in the first two sets, the Blazers fell behind 8-2 to start the third frame. Following a timeout by Head Coach
Mike Swan, however, the Blazers responded in a big way with a 10-4 run to close the gap to a one-point deficit.
The two teams traded points until they reached a 19-19 gridlock late in the third set. A side-out put VSU in front 20-19, and
Chelsea Chavers served for five straight points and a game-winning ace to cap off the night.
With the win, Valdosta State held their winning record in check at 8-6 overall and lifted their conference record to 3-2. The Warhawks, on the other hand, fell to 7-8 overall and saw their GSC record fall to 1-4 on the year.
Individually for the Blazers, Chavers delivered one of her best performances of the season with six kills and a .192 hitting percentage. In addition, the junior racked up five service aces. Setter
Sara Dandridge also displayed versatility, particularly late in the match, with a series of kills that lifted the junior to a total of five kills in ten attempts for a .400 hitting effort on the night.
Ashley Miller and
Tristyn Sells each reached double-digit figures in the kill column, while
Sydney Chick teamed up with Chavers for 15 and 13 digs, respectively.
Valdosta State will return to action next Friday on October 6
th with a trip to Memphis, Tenn. for a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Christian Brothers.
