Kathryn Carter Shuts Out UAH for 9-0 Softball Victory

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State softball team entered the final game of a weekend Gulf South Conference road series against the top-ranked Alabama-Huntsville Chargers in desperate need of a win, and the team responded in a big way with a 9-0 victory on Sunday afternoon in Huntsville, Ala.

Freshman pitcher Kathryn Carter proved to be the highlight of the day with her best outing of the 2017 season. The righty pitched to contact all day and allowed her defense to back her up by issuing no walks. The Blazer defense answered the call with no errors on the day, which resulted in just three Charger hits and led Carter to her second complete-game shutout of the season.

The offense helped secure Carter's effort with a strong performance that began with an early first inning run. Jessica Mohl led off the frame with a double to left center field, and Chelsea Canara teamed up with Hayley Cruthers for back-to-back fly balls, each of which advanced Mohl to put VSU up 1-0.

Two innings later, Mohl sparked another Blazer rally with a leadoff base hit, and Canara followed with a single of her own. After taking one pitch for a strike, Cruthers jumped on Emily Glover's offering for a two-run double into the gap in right center field. The two tallies pushed Cruthers' RBI total up to three on the day and lifted the senior back to the top of the league leaderboard with 56 on the year.

The Blazers piled on in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead, thanks to a two-run double off the bat of Tana McDaniel, and Brandy Morgan added her 10th homer of the season in the seventh, a three-run bomb during a four-run inning for the Blazer offense.

With the win, Valdosta State bumped their overall record to 29-12 on the season and lifted their GSC mark to 16-8. The Chargers, meanwhile, fell to 31-11 overall and dropped to 17-7 in conference play.

The Blazers will return home next weekend for a three-game stint against the visiting West Georgia Wolves. The series will take place on Firday and Saturday, starting with a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
