VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State softball team took game one with a 3-0 win before falling in a narrow 3-2 loss in game two against the West Georgia Wolves in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Friday at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park in Valdosta, Ga.
The reigning GSC Freshman of the Week and Blazer starter
Kathryn Carter extended her current streak of scoreless innings pitched to 15 after picking up her second straight complete game shutout. The win improved the righty to 13-2 on the season.
Freshman
Haley Garrett broke a 0-0 tie in the fifth with a solo shot for the first run of the day. The homer marked Garrett's second of the season and gave Valdosta State a 1-0 lead. Valdosta State's final two runs also came by way of the long ball, as
Hayley Cruthers blasted a two-run shot in the sixth to give Carter a pair of insurance runs to work with during her final inning.
In game two,
Kasie Johnson gave the Blazers a solid outing with five strikeouts and two runs allowed in the game, but an RBI double in the seventh off of reliever
Avery Lamb (12-4) proved to be the difference and gave the Wolves the one extra run they needed in order to give starter Danielle Easterly the win and help her even up her record at 6-6 on the season.
Johnson put together 5.1 innings of solid work, but was forced to turn the game over to Lamb in the top of the sixth after Peyton Stallworth capitalized on a Blazer miscue earlier in the frame and plated Summer Wallace for an unearned run.
Valdosta State recovered in the bottom of the sixth with Cruthers' second homer of the day to tie the game up at 2-2, but the aforementioned tally in the following half-inning was insurmountable and led to VSU's game-two demise.
The Blazers slid to 30-13 on the season and 16-9 in conference play following the split, while the Wolves moved to 23-20 overall and remained even in GSC play at 13-13.
Saturday will feature the third and final game of the series, a rubber match set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park. #TaylorStrong T-Shirts will continue to be available for purchase at the ballpark for $10 each, with all proceeds going to the Macera family.
