HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Valdosta State softball team suffered a pair of Gulf South Conference losses (9-2, 3-1) to No. 23 Alabama-Huntsville in a road trip doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Huntsville, Ala.
The Blazers struck first in game one when
Chelsea Canara doubled to right center in the second inning before moving up on a
Taylor Hartenbach single and scoring on a Tyler Harrison wild pitch. The lead didn't hold long, however, as the Chargers fired back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Trailing by two, the Blazers hung tough until UAH used a Brooke Miller grand slam to fuel a six-run fourth and give the Chargers an insurmountable 9-1 advantage.
Valdosta State's only other run of the game came when
Brandy Morgan led off the fifth inning with a single and came all the way around to score when
Tara McIntyre tripled to center field for the RBI.
Outside of one sour inning in the third,
Kasie Johnson allowed UAH to post just three hits in game two. That one inning was enough for the Chargers, however, as they produced three hits and used one Blazer error to put three runs on the board.
Tana McDaniel singled in a run in the fifth, but that was all the Blazers could muster against Emily Glover, who gave up just three hits and improved to 14-3 on the year.
With the two losses, VSU fell to 28-12 overall and 15-8 in conference play, while the Chargers upped their overall record to 31-10 and their conference record to 17-6.
The two teams will square off for the series finale on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
