VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State softball team extended their flawless Gulf South Conference record to 8-0 on Saturday following a pair of wins over the West Alabama Tigers (9-1, 3-1) at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park.
The No. 6 ranked Blazers (19-4, 8-0 GSC) established control of the contest early and gave VSU starting pitcher
Kathryn Carter plenty to work with after an offensive onslaught in the first two innings.
Brandy Morgan built on a two-run double by Haley Cruthers with a two-run shot to left field in the bottom half of the first inning. The homer represented Morgan's third of the season and helped push VSU out to 4-0 lead after one.
After Carter blanked the Tigers (9-12, 4-4 GSC) in the second, Valdosta State piled on with a monster five-run inning in the bottom half of the frame. Cruthers and Morgan teamed up again for each of the inning's five RBI's, with Morgan acquiring her second homer of the game and her fourth of the season by way of an inside the park round tripper.
The nine-run surge was more than enough for Carter, who pushed out to an 8-0 record after holding the Tigers to just one run scored over the course of five innings pitched.
In game two,
Avery Lamb (8-1) got the nod from Head Coach
Thomas Macera in the circle and gave the Blazers seven innings of work, allowing just one UWA run, which was an unearned tally in the fourth.
Valdosta State's first inning run, by way of a
Taylor Hartenbach sacrifice fly, resulted in a 1-1 score heading into the bottom of the final inning, and Lowndes High graduate
Haley Fowler gave VSU and Lamb the win with a two-run walkoff bomb to end the game.
Fowler's homer represented one of two hits for the freshman in the game and lifted her season total to two. The designated hitter improved her average to .286 on the year as a result of the strong outing.
Valdosta State will finish up the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park.
