Softball Torches Tigers to Cap Off Weekend Sweep

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State softball team finished off the West Alabama Tigers with an 8-3 Gulf South Conference win in the weekend series finale on Saturday afternoon at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park.

The Blazers scored two runs in each of the first four innings to open up an 8-3 lead over UWA,  and Haley Cruthers, who currently represents the RBI leader in the Gulf South Conference with 36, plated a pair in the first inning. Taylor Hartenbach followed with a two run single in the second inning before Tara McIntyre accounted for both of the Blazers' runs in the third, and Brandy Morgan followed in the fourth with her third homer of the weekend and her fifth of the season.

The consistent offensive support by the Blazer bats help lift Kathryn Carter to her ninth win of the year. Carter scattered six hit over a complete game effort, during which she allowed just three runs to cross.

With the victory, the Blazers improved to 20–4 on the season overall, and extended their perfect Gulf South Conference record to 9-0. Meanwhile, West Alabama fell to 9-13 on the season and dropped to 4-5 in Gulf South conference play.

Valdosta State will now turn their attention to the Shorter Hawks, who will host the Blazers for a three-game set, beginning next Saturday, March 11, in Rome Ga.
