VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State men's tennis team took care of business in Pensacola, Fla. and secured a 7-2 over Delta State in neutral Gulf South Conference men's tennis action on Friday.
The victory lifted the No. 7 ranked Blazers to a 5-1 record against conference opponents and improved the squad to 10-4 overall. Meanwhile, the Statesmen fell to 5-9 on the season and dropped to 3-5 in league play.
Jordi Mas and
Fernando Rivas sparked the Blazers in doubles action and gave VSU their first win of the day at No. 2 with an 8-5 win over Hicham Azzaoui and Jeoffrey Noblecourt. Shortly after, the Statesmen scored a win of their own after Mason Vice and Joao Yamacita upset Valdosta State's No. 24 ranked duo of
Leo Blay and
Xavier Pineda on court 3 with a narrow 9-7 victory.
The Blazers picked up momentum, however, after No. 12 ranked
Axel Holm and
Eden Peleg scored an 8-6 win at No. 1 over Timo Schmitz and Andrew Hildenbrand.
With a 2-1 advantage in the match, Mas put the match in VSU's control at No.2 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Noblecourt, and No. 19 Pineda followed with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win over Yamacita at No. 3.
No. 12 ranked Blay then outlasted Azzaoui, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1, before freshman
Davis Stewart torched Julian Massa, 6-0, 6-1, on court No. 5. Valdosta State's only other loss of the day came at No. 4, where Vice upset No. 42 ranked Rivas with a 7-5, 6-3 win, but the Blazers capped off the match with a win by Peleg over Hildenbrand, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6.
Valdosta State will play two more conference matches on Saturday in Pensacola, Fla., beginning with Christian Brothers at 9:00 a.m., followed by Mississippi College at 1:00 p.m.
