PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 7 nationally ranked Valdosta State men's tennis team captured their fifth consecutive victory after defeating the Tigers of West Alabama with a 5-1 win in singles competition during a Gulf South Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon in Pensacola, Fla. Due to predicted bad weather, the two teams only faced off in singles competition.
During the first round, Jordi Mas strung together a 6-4, 6-4 victory over his opponent, Julius Kaverinen at No. 1. Nationally ranked No. 19, Xavier Pineda, jumped out to a slow start against Honorio Fernandez, but eventually regrouped to secure a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 triumph at No. 2.
Meanwhile, nationally ranked No. 42, Fernando Rivas, kept the momentum alive, as he fashioned a tight 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 victory over Andrii Stratiienko in the No. 3 slot. Davis Stewart remained focused as he defeated Christopher Wood in a quick 6-2, 6-4 pickup.
Valentin Mounoto showcased strong efforts as he started off sturdy, but eventually fell off as Henrik Sinkko overcame him, 7-5, 4-6, 4-6, at No. 5. Eden Peleg closed out the final round of the singles competition with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over Anton Lof at No. 6.
With the victory, the Blazers uplifted their overall season record to 9-4 and 4-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Tigers dropped to 7-10 on the season and 4-3 in GSC action.
Up next, Valdosta State will face the Tritons of UC San Diego in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon for a neutral match in Pensacola, Fla. The game is scheduled to begin with a 3:00 p.m. kickoff time.
