Blazers Win 16-Inning Marathon, 5-4 Over ASU

Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Valdosta State baseball team remained unbeaten after enduring a extra inning non-conference battle to defeat the Pirates of Armstrong State with a walk-off win on Saturday in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The neutral site showdown went in favor of the Pirates in the early going, as Armstrong State took a 2-0 lead in the second. The Blazers answered right back in the bottom half of the frame, however, with three runs of their own.

Blazer starter Troy Massaro held the Pirates in check during his six innings of work. The effort gave Valdosta State an opportunity to retain their lead and scratch out an additional run for a 4-2 lead in fifth, despite several runners left stranded by VSU.

Armstrong put pressure on the Blazers in the eighth and opened the inning by placing a pair of runners at second and third with nobody out. Roman Donofro was there to answer the call in relief, however, and managed to escape the half inning unscathed.

The Pirates finally plated a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings, which led to an extra-inning marathon, during which both teams continuously escaped jams to keep the contest locked up at 4-4.

The Blazers finally broke through in the bottom of the 16th, after Harlan Harris came to the plate with the bases loaded before he was hit by a pitch to produce the walkoff victory.

The 16-inning affair stopped just short of matching a school record for the most innings in a single game, which occurred in a 17-inning contest between Valdosta State and David Lipscomb in 1968.

The Blazers improved to 2-0 on the young season with the victory and will look to extend momentum into a Sunday doubleheader, beginning with a 10:00 a.m. matchup against the Eagles of Embry Riddle. Live coverage of the first game will be provided right here at www.vstateblazers.com.
