Blazers Squander Strong Start; Fall to Shorter 3-2

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State Blazers saw a strong start go to waste, as the Shorter Hawks recovered from a 2-0 deficit to defeat VSU 3-2 (25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 10-25, 13-15) in Gulf South Conference action on Thursday night at The Complex in Valdosta, Ga.
 
Valdosta State controlled the first set with a defensive effort that held the Hawks to a hitting percentage of just .083. In contrast, the Blazers put together a .211 offensive performance.
 
The Lady Blazers held their lead with a purpose into the second set where they dominated Shorter 25-16. Valdosta State capitalized on 7 errors by the Lady Hawks during the set. Senior Tristyn Sells ended the set with a kill, which added to one of her team-high 19 kills on the night.
 
Momentum began to shift in the third set, as the teams battled back and forth before the frame eventually ended in a 25-23 Lady Hawk win. Shorter took that momentum into the fourth for a dominant 25-10 win to even up the match at 2-2, and the Lady Hawks held off the Blazers in the final frame to claim the comeback triumph.
 
Sara Dandridge dished out 27 assists on the night, while Chelsea Chavers delivered a team-high 26 digs for the Lady Blazers. Sydney Chick followed in the dig column with 21.
 
The Lady Blazers dropped to 12-16 on the season and 6-9 in the Gulf South Conference. Meanwhile, the Lady Hawks improved to 18-9 overall and 11-4 in league play.
 
The Lady Blazers return to action for Senior Day this Saturday, November 11th to close out the regular season. The match is slated for 2:00 p.m. at The Complex, with senior day festivities to take place prior to first serve.
