VALDOSTA, Ga. - Suvi Savolainen scored her first three goals of the season, and
Taylor Snell set a new single-season scoring mark, as the Valdosta State soccer team cruised to a 6-0 win over Auburn-Montgomery on Wednesday night at The VSU Soccer Complex in Valdosta, Ga.
The rainy conditions led to a slow start for the Blazer offense, but
Haille Paterson pulled the cork in the 33rd minute and muscled a shot past Warhawk keeper Felicia Wester to give VSU a 1-0 advantage.
Paterson's goal represented VSU's only score in the first half, but as
Alyssa Curtis stood tall in goal to keep the Blazers' lead in check, Valdosta State turned a corner in the second half for a scoring barrage.
Tessa Bates sparked the second half offensively after drawing a foul just inside the box, which allowed the Blazers an opportunity at their first penalty kick of the season. Head Coach
Stephen Andrew called on
Taylor Snell, and the junior delivered for her ninth goal of the season, which set a new single-season scoring mark for Valdosta State.
Riley Tennant got in on the action in the 67th minute with her seventh goal of the season, which set off a string of three goals in a five-minute stretch, and Savolainen capped off her night at the 80:16 mark with a rebound goal to put VSU out in front 6-0.
Mallory McDaniel solidified her position as the league-leader in the assist category with two helpers on the night.
With the win, the Blazers improved to 9-3-1 overall, 7-2-1 in Gulf South Conference play. Meanwhile, the Warhawks fell to 4-7 overall and 3-5 in league play.
The Blazers return to action on Friday night against the league-leading North Alabama Lions. The matchup will have major regional implications, as the Blazers and the Lions currently rank No. 6 and No. 4, respectively, in the most recent United Soccer Coaches' South Regional poll.
