LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Blazers returned to form this weekend and capped off a three game sweep over West Alabama with a 7-0 win in Gulf South Conference softball action in Livingston, Ala. on Sunday afternoon.
In contrast to Saturday's successful doubleheader sweep, the Blazers earned Sunday's win without the benefit of the long ball.
Kiley Rusen reached on an error early in the opening inning, and VSU capitalized on the opportunity for three unearned runs.
Brandy Morgan drove in two on a two-out double to follow up
Hayley Cruthers, who plated the first run of the game with an RBI single.
After Blazer righty
Caitlyn Calhoun retired the Tigers in order, the Blazer offense reapplied pressure immediately, as
Lauren Shaw sparked a two-run second with a leadoff single. Rusen roped another base hit two batters later, before
Chelsea Canara and Cruthers added back-to-back singles to put VSU in front 5-0.
Valdosta State added their final two runs in the top of the fourth inning, after
Taylor Hartenbach reached on a base hit, moved up to third on a Canara double, and crossed the plate one batter later courtesy of a UWA passed ball. The final run scored in the form of Canara, who came across on another RBI single from Cruthers.
The Blazers racked up 14 hits in the contest and saw six different players post multiple hits in the contest. Cruthers finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI's, Morgan added two RBI's, and Canara and Hartenbach both scored twice.
Calhoun allowed just three hits in the game and struck out five to improve to 11-3 on the year and lift VSU to a 17-6-1 record overall, 7-5 in GSC play. Meanwhile, Ashley Stassin suffered the loss to fall to 2-2, and the Tigers dropped to 6-14 overall, 0-12 in league action.
The Blazers will now turn their attention to next weekend, when Head Coach
Thomas Macera and his club welcome the defending GSC champion Shorter Hawks to town for a three game set. Action kicks off with a Saturday doubleheader, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park.
