PENSACOLA, Fla. - With the help of
Chris Longoria's first career double-double, the Valdosta State men's basketball team picked up momentum heading into postseason play with a 75-66 win over West Florida in the regular season finale on Saturday at the UWF Fieldhouse in Pensacola, Fla.
Valdosta State controlled the contest throughout, holding a lead for just under 38 minutes of the 40 minutes of competition. Despite the fact that the Argonauts held the game fairly close throughout the afternoon and were able to tie the game up for two minutes of play, UWF never claimed a lead in the contest.
The Blazers secured the win to wrap up regular season play with a 17-10 overall record and a 13-9 GSC record, while West Florida fell to 7-19 overall and 5-17 in league action. The Argonauts season came to an end on Saturday.
West Florida's bright spot in the game came in their rebounding effort, which included 18 offensive rebounds for 21 second chance points. Longoria's performance overshadowed that statistic, however, with the first double-double of his career. The Newnan, Ga. native and Samford transfer led the team with 21 points (8-of-14) and 10 rebounds, while his teammate
Blake Justice put the finishing touches on the night with a perfect 4-of-4 shooting display from beyond the arc, en route to 17 points.
As a team, the Blazers shot 51.0 percent (26-of-51) from the field and 60.0 (9-of-15) percent from the three point line. VSU posted another balanced offensive effort, in which the Blazers saw eight different players scored two points or more.
Valdosta State now turns its attention to the Union Bulldogs, who secured the No. 3 seed after North Alabama fell to No. 1 ranked Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday. The Blazers will travel to Jackson, Tenn. on Tuesday to face Union at 8:00 p.m. The winning team will earn the right to compete in the semifinal round of the GSC Tournament at the Pete Hanna Center at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
