VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State men's tennis team offered up another impressive performance on Friday afternoon in Valdosta, Ga., which led to a 5-3 upset of the No. 6 ranked Lynn Fighting Knights in South Regional action at the VSU Tennis Courts.
After falling behind 2-1 following the conclusion of doubles play, the Blazers (4-2) came roaring back in singles action beginning with
Leo Blay, who blasted Lynn's (3-2) Daniel Riggs 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1. Pavel Mojha outlasted
Gereon Heitmann 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, but the Blazers regained momentum at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-3 win for recent addition
Jordi Mas over Ehan Itzkovitz.
Niklas Herbring added on with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win over Paulo Santos Costa at No. 5, and the Blazers secured the victory with a 6-4, 6-3 for
Xavier Pineda at No. 6 over Jose Porfirio.
In the aforementioned doubles round of play, Riggs and Mojha defeated Heitmann and Herbring 8-3 at No. 1, and Danyang Xu and Porfirio teamed up at No. 3 to edge out
Fernando Rivas and Mas, 9-8. Pineda and Blay teamed up at No. 2, however, to defeat Mehdi Laalej and Itzkovitz and salvage the match with a critical 8-4 win.
The Blazers now turn their attention to Gulf South Conference action, beginning Saturday, March 5th at 10:00 a.m. against the Shorter Hawks at the VSU Tennis Courts.
