Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Valdosta State basketball team struggled offensively against the non-conference Tritons of Eckerd, and ultimately fell 56-72 against EC on Saturday afternoon at The Complex.
With the loss, the Lady Blazers broke even with a 1-1 overall record on the season. Meanwhile, the Tritons advanced their overall team record to 1-1 with the victory.
The two teams went shot for shot in the first quarter which resulted in a 15-15 standstill. The Lady Blazers had five different players that scored in the first frame, but Eckerd answered back each time the Lady Blazers tried to widen the gap.
The Tritons pushed ahead in the second quarter, as they knocked down two three-pointers within a three minute window early in the period.
Kenya Samone' Dixon rallied the Blazers back with a three point play, but Victoria Vine answered with a three ball a few moments later. The Tritons attack leading into the half led to a 12-point advantage for Eckerd at the end of the half.
Throughout the first half, the Lady Blazers went 7-for-26 from the field, which resulted in a 26.9 percent shooting average. Meanwhile, the Tritons posted a 14-for-33 effort and produced a 42.4 percent average in the first half.
Eckerd ran away with the contest following the break, as the Tritons tallied 21 points in the third quarter against just nine for the Lady Blazers. Power forward, Juday Kacie, racked up eight points in the third, leading to a 24-point lead over VSU at the end of the quarter.
The Lady Blazers resurfaced offensively in the fourth and final quarter and outscored the Tritons by a total of eight points in the last frame. Valdosta State's efforts proved to be a little too late as the Tritons fended off the comeback effort.
VSU closed out the second half by shooting 9-for-28 from the field and 2-for-9 from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Tritons connected 14-for-23 from the field and 4-for-15 behind the arc.
Mitchell captured a double-double performance on the contest with 18 points and 11 boards. Meanwhile, Samone' Dixon added 12 points on the day and tallied five rebounds with four being defensive.
The Lady Blazers look to get back on track next week, as they take on Faulkner in another non-conference game on November 17th at The Complex. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
