Volleyball Torches Columbus State, 3-0

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State Blazer volleyball team opened the home portion of their 2015 schedule on a high note, as they defeated the Columbus State Lady Cougars 3-0 at The Complex in Valdosta, Ga. on Tuesday night.

The victory extended the Blazers perfect start to 4-0 and lengthened a 15 game home winning streak that dates back to the start of the 2014 season. Meanwhile, the Lady Cougars were left searching for their first victory, as they dropped to 0-4 on the year.

The Blazers benefitted from a poor hitting effort by Columbus State that consisted of 22 attack errors in the contest against just 21 total kills. The performance resulted in a -.010 hitting percentage for CSU and allowed the Blazers to claim a fairly comfortable win, despite swinging for a .213 hitting percentage on the night.

Susanna Peonia and Ashley Miller led the way for the Blazers on offense with .538 and .455 attack percentages, respectively, while Antia Rodriguez-Sanchez chipped in with seven kills of her own. Jessica Codato anchored the Valdosta State attack with 27 assists, and narrowly missed a fourth straight double-double after picking up nine digs.

While Head Coach Mike Swan felt that the team still has room for improvement, he was pleased with the progress the team has made this season on their service receive.

"I thought the one area we really needed to improve on after this past weekend was our serve receive, and I felt like we did that tonight. We only gave up two or three aces all night, which was a big improvement over Saturday, when we gave up ten in that last match. We were also in system a lot more, so Jess was able to evenly distribute the ball tonight."

Valdosta State will see a short break in their schedule before returning to action next Tuesday at home for the first Gulf South Conference match of the season. Mississippi College will come to town next week to face the Blazers, with a game time scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
