VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State softball program returned to form with a doubleheader sweep over the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes on Wednesday, and will aim to carry the newfound momentum into the upcoming Gulf South Conference series against West Georgia this weekend in Valdosta, Ga.
The rival Wolves of West Georgia (14-23, 7-16 GSC) will come to Titletown on Friday representing one of the bottom three teams in the GSC standings. In contrast, the Blazers (39-4, 20-3 GSC) currently stand at the top of both the GSC and the national rankings.
Despite only two wins in their last ten contests, West Georgia has proven at times this year that they can be a dangerous team. In their most recent GSC series last weekend in Carrollton, Ga., the Lady Wolves kicked off a three-game set with a 9-1 win over the North Alabama Lions, who currently rank second in the league and ninth in the nation. Facing the nation's top pitching staff, the Wolves put together nine hits for nine runs in the series opener, and Jordan Corbin led the charge. The second baseman went 2-for-2 in the game with a double and her sixth home run of the year, a second inning grand slam.
The Blazers are coming off of their toughest conference series of the year against the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers last weekend, in which the team dropped two of three games. Valdosta State will be hungry to bounce back this weekend, and will look to do so with the help of leadoff hitter
Jaime Phillips, who improved her home run total to 15 with a pair of cannon shots in Wednesday's doubleheader. She currently leads both her team and the league in home runs.
Heather Robinson has found a new spot in the Blazer lineup in the last three games serving as the cleanup hitter for Head Coach
Thomas Macera, and the Valdosta, Ga. native has responded favorably. During Wednesday's doubleheader against the Hurricanes, the sophomore hit .500 on the day with three hits in six at-bats. One of those three hits was a double, and she tallied four total bases while driving in three runs on the day.
Due to the expectation of inclement weather, the series was recently rescheduled to take place on Friday and Saturday. The series opens up with a 5:00 p.m. twin bill on Friday afternoon, followed by the series finale at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Follow all of the weekend action live at www.vstateblazers.com!
