VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State softball offensive attack was a bit subdued in the Gulf South Conference series finale against the West Georgia Wolves, but it was enough, as the Blazers picked up a 2-1 victory over the Wolves at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park on Saturday afternoon.
Blazer ace
Caitlyn Calhoun was stellar yet again, especially prior to a one hour lightning delay that halted the game in the top of the fifth. She was perfect, in fact, until Mackenzie Arlt slapped a single through the right side with two outs in the sixth to deny Calhoun her first career perfect game.
The Blazers were held to just five hits on the day and struggled to find a rhythm against UWG's Danielle Easterly. Two runs in the second, however, both RBI's which were driven in by number nine hitter
Halie Imler, provided Calhoun all she would need to pick up her 24th win of the season.
Jennifer Phillips ripped a one out double to spark the only scoring inning for VSU, and after a
Chelsea Canara walk,
Kelly Gordon lofted a perfectly placed infield single behind the circle and out of Easterly's reach to load the bases. The sequence set up Imler for one of her two hits on the day and the pair of aforementioned RBI's.
Valdosta State led 2-0 until Amanda Voyles delivered a two out solo shot in the seventh. The swing accounted for one of just two UWG hits on the day and proved to be a minor bump in the road for the Blazers, as Calhoun induced a groundout from Maegan Coddington to lock up the victory.
The win pushed VSU up to 42-4 on the year and 24-3 in GSC play, while the Wolves fell to 14-26, 7-19 against conference opponents.
The Blazers will be back at home on Tuesday, April 14th, for a non-conference doubleheader showdown with the Albany State Golden Rams. The first pitch at Steel's Diamond is scheduled for 4:00pm.
