Men's Tennis Wins Big Over UAH, 8-1

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Blazer tennis team picked up their second win in as many days on Saturday in Huntsville, Ala. with an 8-1 Gulf South Conference win over the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers.

Valdosta State boosted their overall record to 6-3 and improved to 3-1 in GSC play following the win, while UAH fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 against the rest of the league.

The Blazers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a clean sweep of doubles action that was sparked by a 8-4 triumph for Gereon Heitmann and Ramon Weil at No. 1, followed by a dominant 8-2 victory for Edward Nguyen and Joachim Schemm over Ian Wisener and Pablo Herrero at No. 2. Leo Blay and Francisco Yim Kim secured the third point for VSU with a battle at No. 3 that resulted in an 8-6 win against UAH's team of Harrison Stone and Elliot Hopson.

The only point of the day for the Chargers came at No. 1 singles, where Jose Soto defeated Blay 7-6 (5), 7-5.

From that point forward, the Blazers ran the table with five straight wins, starting with a 6-4, 6-1 for Yim Kim over Nestor Perez at No. 2. A 6-1, 6-1 win followed for Heitmann at No. 3, and Nguyen handled Herrero in convincing fashion with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4.

Working with a 6-1 advantage, Weil and Schemm finished off the Chargers with 6-2, 7-5 and 6-3, 6-2 wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

The busy weekend closes out for Valdosta State with another conference matchup on the road against the Lions of North Alabama in Florence, Ala. The contest is slated for a 9:00 a.m. start, and results will be available at www.vstateblazers.com upon conclusion of the match.
