VALDOSTA, Ga. - In a tough Gulf South Conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Courts, the Valdosta State Blazers fell 8-1 to West Florida, the nation's top ranked team.
The No. 1 Argonauts started the match off with three straight doubles victories, starting with an 8-2 win for Warren Kuhn and Elio Latella over
Gereon Heitmann and
Ramon Weil at No. 1.
Francisco Yim Kim and
Niklas Herbring teamed up to give Alex Peyrot and Kenny Brasil a run at No. 2, but the Blazer duo ultimately fell 8-5. In the final doubles matchup at No. 3, UWF's Pablo Borrero and Pablo Tellez defeated
Edward Nguyen and
Leo Blay 8-4.
Results were similar in singles action, as Peyrot held on to edge out Blay 6-7, 6-4, 10-8 in a tightly contested matchup at No. 1. VSU's woes continued at No. 2, when Herbring fell 7-5, 6-1, and Yim Kim fell 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3.
Heitmann dropped the No. 4 matchup 6-4, 6-4 to Borrero, and Elio Latella edged out Weil 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5. Nguyen salvaged the match and helped prevent the shutout with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Douglas Boe at No. 6.
The Blazers join the women's team on Tuesday, March 3 for a trip to Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga., with play scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
