VALDOSTA, Ga. - The 2015 season continues for Head Coach
Thomas Macera and his Valdosta State Blazer softball team this weekend, with four games of action at Flagler Field in St. Augustine, Fla..
The Blazers enter their second straight weekend of tournament action on the heels of a 3-1 start last weekend in Milledgeville, Ga.. Two of VSU's three wins in on the weekend were secured in the Blazers' final at-bat, thanks to walkoff home runs on consecutive nights by
Courtney Albritton and
Bree Wells.
As a team in the opening weekend of play, the Blazers posted a .288 batting average and tallied 26 runs for an average of 6.5 runs per game. VSU teamed up for 51 total bases, nine doubles, and four home runs, two of which belonged to Albritton, a senior out of Sycamore, Ga..
Albritton, the reigning Gulf South Conference and South Region Player of the Year and this week's Gulf South Conference Player of the Week, connected for eight hits in 14 plate appearances. She racked up 14 total bases and tallied two home runs to improve her career long ball number to 65.
Caitlyn Calhoun, a junior hurler out of Hamilton, Ohio, led the Blazer pitching staff to a respectable opening weekend in which Valdosta State allowed just 10 earned runs over the course of four games, held opponents to a .223 batting average, and posted a 2.50 ERA. Calhoun threw 13 total innings to open up the season with a 1-1 record, and the righty posted a sparkling shutout effort on Saturday against Columbus State that included five strikeouts and just three hits allowed.
The action kicks off on Saturday afternoon against the hosting Saints of Flagler (0-2), with a single matchup slated for a 2:00 p.m. start. Saturday's competition concludes later on Saturday, February 7th, at 4:30 p.m. against Barton (0-0), before the Blazers wrap up the weekend on Sunday, February 8th, with 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. matchups against Flagler and Embry-Riddle (0-0), respectively.
