Next Up for Blazer Softball: Delta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. The Blazers of Valdosta State will host an unexpected home softball series this weekend, as poor weather forced the Lady Statesmen of Delta State to load up and head to Titletown for a three game Gulf South Conference set at Steel's Diamond on Saturday and Sunday.

The action is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader and will finish up on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with the final game of the series.

Valdosta State (14-2, 5-1 GSC) last faced DSU (9-2, 2-1 GSC) in the 2014 postseason, where the Lady Statesmen gave VSU their only loss of the GSC Tournament, a 6-4 thriller that ended by way of an Amber Adcock walkoff homer. Adcock represents Delta State's top hitter and currently leads the conference in both batting average (.647) and on base percentage (.698).

The Blazers remained at No. 2 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II softball poll this week behind West Texas A&M, who edged out VSU in last year's NCAA DII national championship game in Salem, Virginia. Valdosta State is gaining ground, however.  Last week, the Lady Buffs held the first place position by a margin of 21 points. This week, that lead over the Blazers has dwindled to just eight points.

Blazer Nation won't need to look hard to find a Blazer name on the Gulf South Conference leaderboard. VSU is well represented with Courtney Albritton leading the pack by a healthy margin as the top home run hitter (10) and top run scorer (27). The senior also leads the league in hits (29) and holds the second highest batting average (.569). Meanwhile, Chelsea Canara leads the conference in doubles (7), and Jaime Phillips has more sac bunts (4) than any other player in the league. From the circle, Caitlyn Calhoun has won three straight GSC  Pitcher of the Week awards, and has more wins than any other GSC pitcher.
