VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State softball team scored a pair of wins (7-3, 8-0) over Gulf South Conference rival West Florida at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Titletown, USA.
The two victories pushed the Blazers up to 13-2 overall on the young season and boosted the team to 4-1 in GSC play. West Florida, meanwhile, fell to 1-11 on the year and 0-5 against league competition.
Caitlyn Calhoun allowed two earned runs in the contest and three runs total, but another strong effort at the plate by the red and black afforded the junior hurler her seventh win of the 2015 season.
Game one was highlighted by the sparkling hitting performance of shortstop Jaime Phillips. The junior helped put the Blazers on top after she broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a moonshot over the center field wall.
Just one inning later, Phillips delivered again with the key hit of the game, a bases loaded double into the right center field gap that cleared the bases and put Valdosta State in front 5-1. The two-bagger sparked a five run fourth, and the 7-1 deficit was too much for the Argonauts to overcome, despite a two-run homer off the bat of Jessica Wilkinson in the sixth inning.
Phillips finished game one a perfect 4-for-4 and tallied four RBI's and two runs scored.
In game two, the Blazers took control of the game in the opening frame, thanks to a leadoff home run by senior slugger Courtney Albritton. Fellow senior, Fran Johnson, added to the lead when she reached on a missed pop up in the infield and swiped second base when pitcher Sarah Maloney turned her attention elsewhere before the play was over. During the ensuing at bat, Johnson stole third and induced an errant throw from catcher Hannah Camp, which allowed her to cross the plate for the second run of the inning.
The Blazers added two more runs in the second inning on Chelsea Canara's first home run of the season, and Albritton homered again in the fifth to put Valdosta State up 5-0.
Canara struck again in the sixth inning with a two run double that capped off a three run inning that placed the mercy rule in effect and helped pitchers Huntyre Elling and Maci Fletcher team up for the shutout.
Elling improved to 4-0 on the year with the win after dealing 4.2 innings of work and striking out two batters. Fletcher added 1.1 innings and struck out a batter to help finish off the Argonauts.
The three game set against West Florida concludes with a game scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park.
