VALDOSTA, Ga. - Thirteen games into the 2015 season, and it's finally time for the No. 2 Valdosta State softball team to return home to Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park! Expect Blazer Nation to be in full force on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. for the double-header home opener of a three game weekend series featuring the Blazers and the West Florida Argonauts.
West Florida enters the weekend tilt after a rough 1-9 start and an 0-3 start in Gulf South Conference play. Meanwhile, the Blazers have weathered the early road stretch nicely, and return home with an 11-2 record and a 2-1 mark against league opponents.
The Blazers success so far this year has been a direct product of a team effort that includes impressive numbers in multiple statistical categories.
In regards to offensive production, you don't need to look hard to find a Blazer name on the Gulf South Conference leaderboard. VSU is well represented with Courtney Albritton leading the pack as the top home run hitter (7) and top run scorer (21). The senior also leads the league in hits (23) and holds the second highest batting average (.548). Meanwhile, Chelsea Canara leads the conference in doubles (6), and Jaime Phillips has more sac bunts (4) than any other player in the league.Pitching has been equally impressive for Head Coach
Thomas Macera's squad, particularly from his ace. Not only was
Caitlyn Calhoun named the GSC Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week, but she also was named the NFCA Division II National Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday. The honor comes on the heels of a perfect 3-0 record last week, and also marks just the fifth time in VSU softball history that a Blazer has been named National Pitcher/Player of the Week. Calhoun's six wins this year lead the Gulf South Conference.
Saturday's double-header begins at 2:00 p.m., with the first pitch of the season finale set to take place on Sunday afternoon at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park. Live stats will be provided at www.vstateblazers.com, and live updates will be given via Twitter @BlazerAthletics.
