BOCA RATON, Fla. - The No. 10 ranked Valdosta State men's tennis team made a strong bid for an upset over No. 7 Lynn on Saturday in Boca Raton, Fla., but fell short 6-3 after a host of highly competitive matches throughout the afternoon.
Freshman
Leo Blay made at run at No. 1 singles against Daniel Riggs before falling 6-4, 6-4. The loss dropped Blay to 1-1 on the year, while
Francisco Yim Kim forced a third set at before he suffered a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 defeat at No. 2.
Niklas Herbring and
Gereon Heitmann quickly righted the ship, however, with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win over Pavel Mojha at No. 3 for Herbring, followed by a 6-3, 6-4 win for Heitmann at No. 4 over Paolo Volpicelli.
The Fighting Knights reclaimed the lead in the match with wins at both No. 5 and No. 6 after Mehdi Laalej defeated
Ramon Weil 7-5, 5-7, 10-4, and Alessio Iannozi claimed a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 6 over
Joachim Schemm.
In doubles action, Mojha and Laalej picked up an 8-4 win over Yim Kim and Herbring at No. 2, and Iannozi and Rivas picked up an 8-3 victory over Blay and Schemm at No. 3. But the first matchup of the day went in favor of the Blazers. as Heitmann and Weil blew by Riggs and Volpecelli with an 8-4 win.
The Blazers fell to 1-1 on the year after the non-conference loss, and Lynn improved to 2-0.
VSU gets right back to it tomorrow with a match scheduled for 10:00 a.m. in Melbourne, Fla. against the Florida Tech Panthers.
