Box Score 2 ALBANY, Ga. - The Valdosta State softball team offense racked up 15 runs, and
Caitlyn Calhoun posted another shutout to help the Blazers put together a double header sweep over the Golden Rams of Albany State in non-conference action on Wednesday in Albany, Ga. 4-0, 11-2.
Courtney Albritton fueled the offensive output for VSU with a home run in each game. The pair of long balls pushed the senior's season total to five and boosted her career total to 68, just 12 shy of the current NCAA Division II career home run record.
The Blazers quickly took the lead in game one after
Jennifer Phillips plated Albritton, who led the contest off with a single. Two innings later,
Fran Johnson took advantage of a one out opportunity with runners on second and third base when she lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to give Valdosta State a 2-0 lead.
The pair of runs, along with two insurance runs scored later in the contest, proved to be plenty for Calhoun, who held the Golden Rams scoreless throughout the entire seven innings of game one to lock up the victory and improve her record to 4-1 on the year.
In game two, the Blazers went to the fifth inning with a thin 3-2 lead. The offense quickly relieved the pressure, however, with a nine run inning that featured a two-run double by freshman
Taylor Hartenbach, along with both a triple and a home run in the same inning for Albritton. The frame opened up an 11-2 lead for the Blazers and resulted in an early ending to the contest after VSU held ASU scoreless in the bottom half of the inning.
The win moved VSU to 9-1 on the year, and set the stage for Gulf South Conference play, which opens up this weekend with a three game series against the undefeated Hawks of Shorter in Rome, Ga.. The first game of Saturday's series opening double header is scheduled to kick off at 1:00 p.m., and live coverage of all of the weekend action will be available at www.vstateblazers.com.
