HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Valdosta State Blazers used a goal in each half, along with a stellar defensive outing, to notch their third shutout of the season in a 2-0 Gulf South Conference victory over the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers in Huntsville, Ala. on Sunday afternoon.
"What I love about this group is that they have overcome some adversity and grown from it to make us better,"
said Head Coach Rebecca Nolin following the the conference win. "The seniors led the way, and it is a great feeling to get them a win leading into our two remaining regular season home games against West Florida and West Alabama." Senior goalkeeper
McCall Gardner kept the Chargers (6-9-2, 3-8-1 GSC) in check throughout the duration of the 90 minute contest with seven saves, one of which came on a penalty kick by UAH's Sydnie Fiocca midway through the first period.
The save held a lead for VSU, which the Blazers (4-9-2, 3-6-1 GSC) acquired within the first nine minutes of the match on a goal from
Jade Reynolds. Valdosta State earned a corner kick opportunity early in the first period, and
Ava Scott-Moncrief delivered a ball that allowed Reynolds to finish with a beautiful header at the 36:54 mark.
Kim Caitlin Alderman, who fired off a team-high four of VSU's 14 total shots in the match, saw action throughout the entire match on Sunday, but was turned away on all but her last attempt. With 5:20 to play, Alderman used a pass from
Jordan Humbert to score the first goal of her senior season and give the Blazers some breathing room late in the contest.
Valdosta State secured the victory, despite a 9-7 advantage in the shots on goal column. Both teams tallied 14 shots in the contest, but Gardner edged out UAH goalkeeper Larae Breaux's five saves with her aforementioned seven denials.
"I'm very proud of these young ladies for getting this result today," added Nolin. "We thoroughly deserved the win and the three points, and after a tough string of results lately, we were certainly due a result that went our way."
Outside of Alderman's four shot attempts,
Madison Cutts and
Mallory McDaniel helped pressure the Chargers on offense, combining for six of VSU's 14 shots and four of the Blazers' seven shots on goal.
Valdosta State will return home for their final two regular season contests next week, beginning with a Wednesday night matchup on October 28
th against the rival Argonauts of West Florida. The match is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start at The VSU Soccer Complex in Valdosta, Ga.
