VALDOSTA, Ga. – On a beautiful Wednesday evening at The VSU Soccer Complex, the Valdosta State Blazers kept their most recent Gulf South Conference showdown close, but two late goals ultimately lifted West Florida to a 3-0 win over the VSU soccer team.
Shelby Jennings took the first shot in the opening minutes of the contest with a near miss off of the crossbar. The Argonauts responded with pressure of their own, but a solid effort by
McCall Gardner and the Blazer defense held UWF scoreless throughout the duration of the first half, despite 11 shot attempts by the Argonauts.
The deciding goal came at the 34:51 mark in the second half on a tough break for the Blazers. Gardner deflected an attempt by Amber Pennybaker for a brilliant save, but UWF's leading scorer, Daryl Bell, was there for the rebound and an easy score.
The Blazers kept the contest close until the 79
th minute, when West Florida's Kaley Ward saw an opportunity from the center of the penalty box. Gardner was there for the deflection again, but the redirection wasn't enough to keep Ward's shot from slowly rolling into the right netting.
With a 2-0 lead in the final minute, Bell struck again with a successful header to close out the scoring for the Argonauts. The goal marked the 12
th of the season for Bell and put UWF on top 3-0.
West Florida improved to 12-4-0 on the season and 7-3-0 in conference play, while the Blazers fell to 4-10-2 overall and 3-7-1 in conference play.
