CARROLTON, Ga. - Valdosta State's string of heartbreaking losses extended a game further on Tuesday night in Carrollton, Ga., as the Blazers lost another tight Gulf South Conference matchup against the West Georgia Wolves in a 2-1 overtime defeat.
The Blazers gave up an early first half lead after UWG's Alexis Lewis converted a pass from Katy Mitchell into a goal at the 20:35 mark, which sent VSU to intermission with a 1-0 deficit.
Valdosta State retaliated, however, in the opening minutes of the second period when
Jade Reynolds connected for her second goal of the season to equalize the contest at 1-1.
The stalemate held for the remainder of regulation, despite a healthy number of shot attempts by Valdosta State throughout the period. VSU outshot the Wolves 10-4 in the second half and 21-16 on the night, but UWG's Francessca Ellis dashed the Blazers hopes with a golden goal just over one minute into the first overtime period.
The loss dropped the Blazers to 3-9-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the conference, while UWG kept their playoff hopes alive, improving to 7-6-1 overall and 4-3-1 in GSC play.
Ava Scott-Moncrief led the Blazer attack with seven of the Blazers' 21 shots on the day, while
McCall Gardner and the Blazer defense held the Wolves to just one goal on 15 shots in regulation, before allowing the game-winner in extra time.
The Blazers will aim to bounce back on October 25th in their final road game against conference opponent Alabama- Huntsville in Huntsville, Ala. The game is set to start at 2:00 p.m. EST and live stats will be available at www.vstateblazers.com.
