Next Up for VSU Soccer: Union

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State soccer team will shoot for their first victory on the road this season, when the Blazers take on conference opponent Union on Saturday afternoon in Jackson, Tenn.

The weekend matchup will feature Valdosta State with a 3-7-2 record so far on the season and the Union Bulldogs, who have compiled a 3-9-1 overall record. VSU will be looking for another conference victory after two hard fought battles ending in ties in the last two games against Tampa and Spring Hill. The remarkable defensive efforts that the Blazers have shown during the entire season led to an average of only 1.58 goals conceded thus far. In the last four games, the Blazers gave up exactly four goals to their opponents. One major factor in keeping a clean slate this weekend will be VSU goalkeeper McCall Gardner, who has compiled 5.58 saves per game this season, making her the second best GSC keeper in that category.

Even though Union's overall record is under .500, the Bulldogs have shown strong performances this season at home, beating West Florida 1-0 and Spring Hill College 3-0. Union's success, especially in conference play (3-3-1), can be somewhat attributed to senior forward Honeye Heydari, who is ranked eighth in the conference for scoring 0.60 goals per game while taking 4.40 shots on average.

The matchup should be an interesting one considering the resilient Blazer defense and Union's home strength. The conference showdown is slated for a 3:00 p.m. EST start, and live stats will be available on www.vstateblazers.com.
