Career Day for Berry Earns Volleyball 3-2 Win Over UAH

Destiny Berry set a new school record for blocks in a match during VSU's 3-2 comeback win on Saturday

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Valdosta State volleyball team put together a record-setting blocking performance in Huntsville, Ala. that fueled a rousing come from behind victory, as the Blazers won three straight sets to claim a 3-2 (22-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17, 15-9) win over the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers in Gulf South Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon.

The Chargers jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage in the first set, but the Blazers weathered the early storm and fought back to within two points when Blazer senior Destiny Berry connected for a kill to cut the deficit to 15-13 midway through the frame. UAH surged with an 8-4 run to make the score 23-17, a deficit that the Blazers were unable to overcome, despite a minor 5-2 run to close out the set.

The second set produced a similar result, as the Blazers kept the score close, but trailed throughout most of the frame and saw the match slip away after VSU fell victim to a decisive 8-6 run by the Chargers.

Valdosta State bounced back in the third set with a narrow 25-23 win, thanks to a 5-3 run by the Blazers after the Chargers knotted the game up at 20-20 late in the set. Berry accounted for three of VSU's final five points in the frame with two kills and a key block for set point that turned away a Rachel Burgman attack.

The block was one of 16 for Berry on the day, which doubled a previous career high of eight blocks held by the Texas native and marked a new school record for the most blocks in a match. The total also placed the middle blocker in a four-way tie for fourth place in the GSC record books for the most blocks in a match. The rare feat marked the first time since 2006 that a GSC player tallied 16 or more blocks in a single contest, when Arkansas-Monticello's Kameshia Melton posted 16 total blocks against Grambling.

"Destiny was phenomenal for us today both offensively and defensively," said Head Coach Mike Swan. "To put together such a strong performance on the road was huge for us. I'm so proud of her progress as a player, and I think she will continue to put up impressive stats like this throughout the season."

In the fourth, the Blazers broke a 2-2 stalemate with one of Berry's 16 kills, and VSU never looked back. The team held the lead throughout the remainder of both the fourth and fifth sets with 25-17 and 15-9 wins, respectively.

The win lifted the Blazers conference record back above .500 at 4-3, while the squad's overall record improved to 7-3. Meanwhile, the Chargers fell to 6-6 overall and 4-4 in GSC play.

The double-double for Berry was her first of the year, and her .519 hitting percentage marked the third time this season that the middle blocker notched a percentage above .500

Next up for Valdosta State is a big GSC match at home against West Georgia. Tuesday night's 6:00 p.m. match has been tabbed as "Volley and Victory" night, sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Cass Burch Auto in Quitman and Valdosta. Former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett will be in attendance, and will share his story of victory immediately following the conclusion of the match.
