ROME, Ga. - The Valdosta State soccer teamed picked up their third consecutive victory and second straight shutout with a Gulf South Conference win over the Shorter Hawks at Ben Brady Field on Friday afternoon in Rome, Ga..
The win evened up the season for Valdosta State at 3-3 and improved their GSC record to a perfect 3-0, while the Hawks fell to 4-2 on the season and 0-2 against league competition.
Despite 11 shots for the Hawks and five shots on goal in the contest, Blazer goalkeeper
Olivia Mills turned away all five of those shots to pick up her 25th career shutout and her second shutout of the 2014 season. The effort by the reigning GSC Defensive Player of the Week was a critical one for Valdosta State, and as a result, the Blazers lone goal was just enough to allow VSU to claim the victory.
Maegen Doyle delivered the only score the Blazers would need early in the contest when she took advantage of a free kick opportunity and drilled a 30-yarder past the keeper. The unassisted game-winner in the seventh minute of the contest marked the second of the season for Doyle.
Valdosta State edged out the Hawks in the shot column with 12. five of which were on goal. Shorter's Alden Powell notched four saves for the Hawks after allowing the only goal of the match in the opening minutes. The Blazers also earned five corner opportunities against just two for Shorter.
"It was another favorable result for us today in conference play," said Head Coach
Rebecca Nolin. "We possessed well at times and got forward well from it. We created some great chances but weren't able to put them away, but now we can turn our attention to Sunday afternoon's game against Lee, which should be a tough one."
Next up for the Blazers is another GSC match against the Flames of Lee on Sunday afternoon at the VSU Soccer Complex. The battle of the Flames and the Blazers is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start and can be followed live via live stats and live video coverage at www.vstateblazers.com.
