HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama-Huntsville made 13-of-24 three-pointers as the Chargers defeated Valdosta State 83-51 in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action at Spragins Hall Saturday afternoon.
UAH (7-1, 2-0) shot 60 percent from the floor in the first half while limiting the Blazers (5-3, 0-2) to just 38.2 percent from the floor.
The first eight minutes of the game were closely contested as the lead changed hands four times. After Valdosta State went in front for the final time at 9-8 on a three-pointer by
Nils Dejworek with 14:20 to play, the Chargers used a 21-12 run over the next eight minutes of the game to grab the lead for good.
Six different Alabama-Huntsville players scored during the Charger run, led by Ronnie Mack who made three three-pointers for nine points. Mack's final two trifectas were wrapped around a
James Spencer bucket for the Blazers and gave UAH a 29-21 lead with 4:46 to play in the first half.
Valdosta State briefly closed to within six points following the run, but saw UAH push its advantage to 16 points twice over the remainder of the half, the final time coming on a Kip Owens jumper that gave the Chargers a 45-29 halftime advantage.
After making only 13-of-34 first half shots, Valdosta State connected on only nine of its 31 attempts in the second 20 minutes of play. The Blazers' shooting struggles helped Alabama-Huntsville push its advantage to 20 points just two minutes into the second half.
The Blazers closed to within 17 points with 14 minutes to play, but proceeded to miss 13 of its next 16 field goal attempts as Alabama-Huntsville opened its largest lead at 83-46 with 0:45 to go in the contest.
Jeff Nibo and
Josh Lemons each scored nine points to lead Valdosta State offensively while
Colin Cook and
Blake Justice each had six rebounds. The Blazers made 22-of-65 field goals in the game, including only 3-of-20 three-pointers.
Mack tallied 21 points to lead all scorers as he made 7-of-8 three-pointers in the contest. Owens also scored in double figures with 12 points while Seab Webster finished with 10. The Chargers connected on 31-of-58 field goal attempts and owned a 40-35 advantage in rebounding.
Valdosta State returns to action Wednesday, December 10 when it hosts Lee in Gulf South Conference play at The Complex.
