AUGUSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State was unable to overcome a poor shooting performance as the Blazers fell 92-61 to Georgia Regents at Christenberry Fieldhouse Wednesday afternoon.
The Blazers, who fell to 4-1 on the season, shot just 35.6 percent from the field in the game as they made on 21 of 59 field goal attempts. Nearly half of VSU's shots came from beyond the three-point line as Valdosta State attempted 26 trifectas, but made only seven. Meanwhile, Georgia Regents, which improved to 3-0, shot 59.3 percent and dished out 21 assists on its 32 made baskets.
VSU scored the first five points of the game as it made it first two field goal attempts, but saw the Jaguars score the next 10 points and 22 of the next 28 Â of the game to grab the lead. The Blazers made just three of their 14 field goal attempts and turned the ball over six times during the GRU run, which ended with Georgia Regents holding a 22-11 lead with 8:27 to go in the first half.
Josh Lemons got Valdosta State back to within single digits with a jumper in the paint 20 seconds later and
James Spencer added a lay-up to pull the Blazers to within seven points, but the Jaguars closed the first half on a 21-8 run to grab a 43-23 lead at the intermission.
The Blazers got to within 16 points twice in the opening minutes of the second half, but were unable to pull close as Georgia Regents pushed its advantage to 20 points on a Henry McCarthy lay-up with 16:07 remaining and maintained the advantage the remainder of the game.
Blake Justice was the only Valdosta State player to score in double digits as he finished with 10 on 4-of-12 shooting.
Jeremiah Hill added nine points while Spencer had seven points and nine rebounds
Keshun Sherrill tallied 20 points to lead Georgia Regents. Sherrill also dished out six assists and turned the ball over just one time in the game.
Valdosta State returns to action Saturday, November 29 at 8:00 p.m. when it hosts Webber International in The Complex.
